This document was part of the research for the "Our School History" project. Scotch #1, 1850-1869; Scotch #2, 1869-1926; Scotch #3, 1926-1989; Scotch #4 1989- . Settlers to the area, mostly hailing from Scotland, built the first "Scotch Settlement" school, a simple log cabin, c. 1850, on land owned by Angus McCallum. In 1869, as the local population grew, the School Board of District #2 (Scotch) voted to build a new wooden, one-room school on land purchased from the James Greer farm, kitty-corner to the log school. This one-room school served the needs of the community for about 75 years. Parent involvement has been a strength of the Scotch community since the founding of the first school in the mid-1800s. Favorite PTA/PTO activities have included Hot Dog Day, Carnival, and FunDRun. The third Scotch School was built directly behind the wooden school in 1926. This brick school initially had just two classrooms, but several additions over the years added more classrooms, a gymnasium, a lunchroom, and offices. By the late 1980s, the student population had outgrown the school. Voters approved a bond issue to build a new elementary school on 17 acres across Commerce Road from the brick school. Though other names were considered, the School Board elected to retain the "Scotch" name to preserve the legacy of the early settlers. After elementary instruction moved to the new Scotch School in 1989, West Bloomfield School District Administration and Community Services relocated to the old brick building. Scotch earned the National Blue Ribbon Award in 1990. In 2013, the bell that presumably hung above the one-room schoolhouse was brought out of storage and installed on a tower outside the school. |
