Two stock certificates for the Detroit and Charlevoix Railroad Company. Issued to Willis C. Ward, Franklin B. Ward, and George K. Root, Executors of and Trustees under last Will and Testament of David Ward. Certificate No. 6: December 31, 1902 For 120 shares valued at $100 each Certificate No. 11: June 17, 1903 For 100 shares valued at $100 each Known as the "Timber King of Michigan," David (who owned 70,000 acres of timberland in northern Michigan) began building the Frederic and Charlevoix Railroad Company in 1893 to ship harvested timber to sawmills. Following David's death in 1900, Willis and other estate executors started a corporation called the Detroit and Charlevoix Railroad Company and transferred over all equipment and property from Frederic and Charlevoix Railroad Company. They then sought to improve the existing railroad so lumber could be shipped to large cities like Chicago. |
