This photo was part of the research for the "Our School History" project and was used in the final panel. First school in the Green District was a log cabin built near the southwest intersection of Orchard Lake and Walnut Lake Roads. Second Green School was a sturdier one-room, wood-frame school built on the Hartwell Green family farm c. 1866. Third Green School was built in 1948 and was renamed Green Media Center in 2011. The fourth Green Elementary School opened in 1956 just to the east of the third Green school and was renamed Sheiko Elementary School in honor of long-time principal Katherine Sheiko in 2011. Memoirs suggest the first school in the Green District was a log cabin built near the southwest intersection of Orchard Lake and Walnut Lake Roads. A sturdier one-room, wood-frame school built on the Hartwell Green family farm, c. 1866, replaced the cabin, providing a more suitable facility. A day-long community project known as "Operation Green Thumb" converted open fields into a playground in 1958. Families came from the whole area to grade the fields, pick up stones, and make a baseball diamond. Further playground and garden improvements were made by families in 1998 and 2004. In June, 2011, the West Bloomfield School Board voted to rename the school Sheiko Elementary in honor of retiring principal, Mrs. Katherine Sheiko. The third Green School, built in 1948, included two large classrooms and two smaller rooms, used for industrial and domestic arts. This building has been renovated, expanded, and repurposed several times. It has housed the District Media Center and local cable commission. Once nicknamed "Little Green", the building was formally named Green Media Center in 2011. The fourth Green Elementary School opened in 1956 just to the east of the third Green school. A pine tree was planted near the driveway in honor of former teacher George Merring. A day-long community project known as "Operation Green Thumb" converted open fields into a playground in 1958. Families came from the whole area to grade the fields, pick up stones, and make a baseball diamond. Further playground and garden improvements were made by families in 1998 and 2004. Community involvement has been strong from the very beginning, including support from an active PTO. After WBSD announced a redistricting plan in early 2024, it was decided that students from Sheiko Elementary School would temporarily move to Abbott Middle School while the old Sheiko Elementary building at 4500 Walnut Lake Road is demolished. A new, state-of-the-art building will be constructed in its place. The new Sheiko Elementary School is set to open in August, 2026. |
